While the Anchor of Hope organization has existed as a Romanian nonprofit organization (Ancora Sperantei) for decades, the US-based Anchor of Hope Romania, Inc was formed in mid-2026. We have filed for 501(c)3 status with the IRS and expect a ruling sometime in late 2026. Until this happens, contributions are not tax-deductible in the US.

Donations made to the US-based Anchor of Hope Romania, Inc will be distributed to the Anchor of Hope organization in Romania (Ancora Sperantei). While Sarah Smith, Anchor of Hope’s founder and president, resides the US, appropriate funds will also be used to provide for her living expenses and medical care of the special needs children she fosters or has adopted.

Yes! With 9 kids in the house, Sarah can always use a helping hand if you’re around Wilmington, NC. In addition, there are many opportunities to serve in Romania if you are willing to travel.
